Tuljabhavani Mata Latest Image Gallery, Tuljapur

The history of Tuljabhavani Mata Temple has been mentioned in the "skanda puran". There was a sage known as "Kardam" After his death his wife "Anubuti" had performed a penance at the banks of river "mandakini " for Bhavani mata to look after her infant child. While performing the penance the demon known "Kukur" tried to disturb her penance during which Mata Bhavani came to the aid of "Anubuti" and killed the demon "Kukur". From that day onwards the Goddess Bhavani came to be known as Tulja Bhavani. The temple is located on the hill of "Bala ghat". The same place is today known as Tuljapur.

The Idol: The Idol of the Shree Tulja Bhavani mata is a "swayambu" idol. The goddess is having eight hands sitting on a thrown.

The goddess bhavanee’s favorite animal for riding is the lion. So it is set up. The main room-or-gaabhara (sanctuary) is also made up of stones. In it stands the main idol of Bhavanee Mata. The idol is carved out of a special black stone (gandakee-stone).

On the right a lion is carved out. On the left there is the lady-devotee viz. Anubhooti. Near the right shoulder there is moon and near the left shoulder the sun is carved. The idol has eight hands. Various types of weapons are in her palms.

In one of her right palms she holds a trishoola (a three pointed spear) which she has stabbed in the chest of a demon Mahishasura. Her right foot is pressed on the demon. The left leg is straight on the ground. Between her two legs there is the beheaded head of a he-buffalo.

The idol is artistically carved out. It is not fixed in the ground. It is moved on some special auspicious festivals. The goddess has worn a crown and some of her long hair has come out from the crown.

The idol is about three feet in height. Behind the temple a big, smooth, ball shaped, black stone is kept. It is known as ‘Chintamanee stone’. (Wish-full-filling-stone). An innocent devotee keeps his both palms on the stone and thinks of his problem. If the stone – ball moves on the right side his problem gets solved. If the stone moves on the left side his problem does not get solved. It is a matter of belief and one has to pay meager change for that.
